Trying to Help (Professor Greene, Rosabelle and Invite)
Richard Greene
It was time to get down to some work for the Hufflepuff House. Richard felt it was an honor to be head of his old house. Even with the years which had flown by, it felt natural to walk through the common room. Walking over to the fire place he started a small blaze, just enough to keep the dampness out of the room. Even though this was a magical castle, it still had all the earmarks of any castle, cold and damp.
He settled himself down on the couch and put the papers he wanted to look over next to him. The children were still in class for about another two hours, so he could read in peace and quiet. He had already been through the material once and had set up an appointment with one of the students. At that time they could move into the comfortable, but small office connected to the main room. Richard had found Professor Harris’ notebook under the desk he used in the office Richard now occupied. Professor Harris had been found slain at the desk, just before the memorial services for the last Headmaster, Headmaster Witchard, who had also been mysteriously killed.
Several of the pages were just random notes which Richard discounted as not meaning anything. One of the notes on the forth page caught his eye though. It was concerning one of the Hufflepuff children. It just said “Rosa, Help?” Richard retrieved his roster from the bottom of the stack and found Rosabelle Fairmont, a 4th year. It was the only name which could have matched. He continued to thumb through the pages. Several other names showed up which he would check into, but on page 12 he found the following: “Rosa, very strong magical possibilities, but very under used; seems to be afraid of using magic. Check with Medics to see if anything may be wrong there.”
Richard was becoming very interested. He knew he could not move too fast on the issue because without meaning too, the possibility of making the situation worse always existed. He would check with the Medics as soon as he could. After turning another few pages another entry turned up. “Tried to talk with Rosa about problem but everything here seems to be in an uproar. Will check over the term break and see what I can find out.”
There were only about six more pages with something written on them. The last page had written on it, “Need to find Deputy Head Mistress McChey as soon as possible, just found out we are….” The sentence stopped there. The only other thing on the page was “He has found me, take care all, I am done…” When Richard had found the notebook it had been stuffed in a crevasse under the top of the desk.
Richard had stopped reading and looked off into the fire. This school was becoming anything but dull. First he had been threatened by the caretaker to stay out of his office and closet, now he had a mystery about a young student, classes to teach, and a notebook filled with cryptive messages. When he looked at the clock, he saw at least one of the mysteries could be worked on in about 15 minutes. He settled in to write in his own journal while he waited.
2/19/12 – Rosa
Rosabelle looked at the message again. Her new Head of House wanted to talk to her. Rosa shook her head as she was starting this term on a very bad foot, so to speak. First night here, she had received a detention slip from the caretaker. Then he had embarrassed her in front of everybody. Then because of her nightmares and detention, she had been late for class this morning. When she had finally gotten to class, the professor had handed her a note from Professor Greene.
As she walked to his office, she wondered what she had done now, It only the third day and I am already in major trouble with the Caretaker. Could he have told Professor Greene about my going into the forest? Plus another black rose, was found in my stuff when I got here. First my pride gets my mother noticed. Then just as I am about to tell papa about it, mama dies. Last term, Professor Harris asks to see me and is found dead. I might love the black roses but the meaning clear, I am death to anyone I'm close to. I should never have received my magic back.
Her family had been trying to find out what she was keeping secret but she had decided never to tell. Rosa had already gotten the message loud and clear. If she hadn't bragged, then her mother would never have received that first visit. The mysterious man was right, her family would hate her for what she had done. Rosa knew that she didn't deserve the magic that her mother saw her receive. Her friend, Professor Freemen also wanted to talk to her but she was afraid that she might jinx him as well.
As she reached her common room, she saw Professor Greene in a chair by the fire. Walking up to him, with her head down, Rosa said quietly, "You wanted to see me sir?"

2/20/12 – Richard
Looking up from his private journal, Richard saw a small girl standing in front of him. He knew Rosa was a 4th year, but this girl looked younger. She had a pixie quality about her.
Closing the journal and placing it on the stack of papers beside him, he flashed what he hoped was a warm and disarming smile. The girl was definitely shy and he did not want to scare her. “Hello, Rosabelle, I am glad you could make it.” Other students were starting to enter the room, so he continued, “How about if we go to my office over there,” he motioned to the door near the back of the room, which was between the two staircases, which lead up to the boys and girls separate dorm rooms.
Slowly rising he lead the way to the room, opened the door and stepped back to let Rosa enter first. “Have a seat on the couch please.” He entered and took a seat on the opposite end of the small settee. Physically turning toward her on the couch, and putting the stack of papers between them, he rested his elbow on the back and looked at the young girl. “Rosabelle let me tell you first you are not in any trouble. I have heard you had a small problem with the caretaker. If it continues I want you to come and tell me immediately. Mister Caretaker and I have had a few words ourselves and I would greatly relish the ability to take him down a couple more pegs. I take my job as Head of House very seriously.”
Picking through the papers he pulled out Professor Harris’ journal. Showing it to Rosa he continued, “This is Professor Harris journal, which I found in the office I now occupy. One of the names which appear often is yours, nothing bad, mostly concerning worry about you. It seems Professor Harris recognized a strong magical ability in you, but was worried you were not using your skills to the utmost.” Richard stopped for a moment, to let the information sink in.
“In my travels, I have discovered people who do not like doing things, have either never done them before and are worried they will fail or look foolish; or they have done whatever it is and failed or had a bad experience, so they have decided to never try it again.” Holding his smile and trying to give the child a warm glance, he questioned, “I know you have done magic before, quite well, but you are holding back now. Rosabelle, you can trust me. I can help or at least get you to the right people who can help.”
02/20/12 – Rosa
Rosa heard the Professor's voice and thought that he had not seemed upset with her. She headed for his office confused by what he wanted if not to reprimand her.
Rosa sat down on the couch after entering the room. She glanced at the desk and cringed. As she remembered back to the night she had come to see Mr. Harris. He had requested her to see him that night as the students was going home after the Headmaster's funeral. She had seen him dead with a note by his head on the desk. She had taken the note and ran from the room. Later she had seen that the note was addressed to her. After reading it, Rosa had burned it. Rosabelle did not realize that there were tears in her eyes. Harris had died because of her secret and the note had proved it.

Rosa smiled but when the caretaker was mentioned, Rosa started crying as she tried to figure out how to explain.
Rosa still had tears in her eyes as she realized that her Head of House was upset that the caretaker had overstepped his bounds by giving her detention without taking the problem to Professor Greene. Rosa tried to smile as she nodded. Pulling out the detention slip, she handed it to Mr. Greene. She wondered if she would still have to do the detention. Then she thought of her sister and was afraid that she had just gotten Liladora in trouble. It was to late to get back the slip so quickly she tried to lessen the damage done. Rosa said, "Sir, My sister only went into the forest to try to talk me into coming back to the castle. She would never have disobeyed the rules. You can ask..." She stopped as she was afraid to involve Professor Freemen. She liked him and was worried that he would be fired because he had never stopped her from going in. Though he had kept her close to the entrance and stayed close.
Rosa listened as the professor talked about how Professor Harris had seen potential in her. She smiled but then remembering what her pride had already cost her, she started tearing up. When would she learn that her boasting and pride was getting people she cared about killed? Rosa sadly shook her head as she thought a little out loud, “My pride in my mother's vision got the man interested in her. I will never become what she saw." Though she wondered if Harris had found out and was killed because of it, "Just like mother."
Rosa realized that her Head of House was trying to figure out why she was not even trying to reach the ability level that Professor Harris had believed she was capable of. Rosa shook her head as she said, "I am a latent, who should have never received my magic, Sir."
She said much quieter, "because I bring death to anyone I care about, like mama."
(Occ: The detention slip is talked about in the Hufflepuff table. The rest has been mentioned in other thread.)
Richard
As he was making himself comfortable on the couch, Richard caught a cringing movement out of the young student. It had happened when she had looked at the desk. He decided not to bring the moment up, instead he settled onto the couch and looked at Rosa. The girl was scared, but of what, hopefully not of him.
Pulling a clean handkerchief from his robe he handed it to the girl. It appeared to Richard the caretaker had taken a greater toll on the young Rosa than he had thought in the beginning. He made a mental note to bring the fact up to Anthony when they had the talk, he was sure was coming. As long as he was Head of House for Hufflepuff, no one was going to make his students cry. “Strike one, Mr. Caretaker,“ he thought to himself.
Richard reached and calmly took the detention slip. He was still learning the rules of the present day school, but he knew the rule about taking problems about students to their Head of House before disciplinary action was taken, still was on the books. Granted the girl should not have been near the forest unattended for her own safety, but detention was not in order, only an explanation on why it should not have happened would have been proper. “Strike two, Mr. Caretaker,” he added to his mental list.
He had caught the pause in Rosa’s explanation. “Who can I talk to Rosabelle? Was someone else there that night? I can only help totally if I know all the details. Was the person a friend or with the caretaker?” Richard wondered if he had more than one person he was going to have to go up against.
Listening to every word Rosa said, realizing any little information could help him understand, Richard picked up on the fact Rosa’s mother thought she was special and Rosa hoped she would not be like her mother that seemed strange. Most of the girls in his family would be proud to be like their mothers. It was possible though there may have been something wrong with Rosa’s mother. This presented more facts to check out.
The next two statements almost stopped Richard from any kind of clear thinking. “Rosabelle I do not think you are a latent, but I will check it out for you, if I have your permission of course.” He was not sure how to address the next statement. Slowly, so he did not frighten her, he took the stack of papers between them and put them gently on the floor. Then he slowly moved to the middle of the couch. He dared not move any closer, because he sensed the girl was scared at what she had just admitted, and he did not want her to run.
“Rosa, look at me. Child you did not cause the death of your mother. No matter what people have told you, or how they have tried to frighten you, you are not the cause. Sometimes evil adults use fright, especially with children to control the situation. You must trust in the adults you love and those who really care about you to help you live up to your full potential. The people, who are frightening you, may be worried if you reach your highest level of magic They may be worried you will be too powerful, and come after them, so they are making sure you do not try and become powerful. Do you understand child?”
“Rosa, if you can trust me, I will try and help you. If you do not know if you can trust me, find an adult you do trust, maybe Professor Richards or Tarik, or even Deputy Head Mistress McChey. (Richard knew Sasha would vouch for him, because even though he was a Hufflepuff and she had been in Ravenclaw they had become close friends during their shared school years and Richard was sure Sasha would have mentioned him to Tarik. It was because of her invite he was here) Ask anyone you truly in your heart you know you can trust to check me out. I would not mind.”
Trying to think of anyone else she could ask who would make her feel safe, the name Fairmont caught in his mind. “Rosa, are you the daughter of Councilman Lucas Fairmont? If so child he would be good to ask. Also if your sister is Lily Lupin, you can check with Gabriel Lupin on my credentials.” Richard decided he would send a note to Gabriel and ask for a meeting. The man was highly thought of from the reports he had heard. Richard wanted to give the child a hug and comfort her further, but he was afraid the child would take it the wrong way. It would be best if she would learn to trust him, by checking with others.
(OOC: I have Sasha’s permission to mention the friendship between her and Richard)
Rosa
Rosa realized that Professor Greene was worried about the other person. He didn't need to be as her friend had not liked the caretaker either. She had just not wanted to be the reason he had gotten in trouble. Rosa knew deep down that her friend had only shown himself because he had not liked what the caretaker had been saying. She also knew that her HOH was waiting for an answer. Trying to sound calm as she said, "Sir, I just didn't want Will, I mean Professor Fremen in trouble. He got on the Caretaker's case that night and well Mr. Mirabeau was not happy." She was going to keep her friend's secret as he had risked a lot to protect her and Lily that night.
Rosa nodded as she said, "I am marked as getting my magic on my tenth birthday, though my brother Rome said that I first showed at two. I would like to know."
“Rosa, look at me.
She turned to face him.
Rosabelle thought about what the professor was saying. He was saying that the man in the cloak had only been wanting to frighten her. Well he had done that as Rosa was scare that he would come back. She should have never let him into the house but he had said that he was an old friend of her mother's. She had thought about telling her father about the doctor but had been told that her family would be angry because she had been bragging about her mother's gift.
Everybody told her to trust but she had trusted and her mother just got sicker. She had trusted the man and his friend with her mother's dream about her and now her mother was dead. Rosa started to cry as she nodded and said, "but I don't want to be a bird that hurts people, all I ever wanted was to be a healer. Mama's wrong, I won't be that bird of fire, I won't"
Rosa smiled as she tried to think of why she always went into the forest. Saying in a low voice as if to herself, "It because the best healing plants are in there." She might ask her friend or even Tarik about him. Thinking back as she remembered that she had not left her usual gift for the centaurs. She would need to remedy that next time as she always left a jar of her healing trials, that she made from the plants.
Rosa smiled as she asked, "Professor Greene, if there any healing meds that you can make with Black Roses?" It was time those roses that was always left for her was put to use.
Rosa smile widen until she saw the Black Roses on the window. With tears, in her eyes, Rosa ran from the room.

Richard
When Richard heard Will Fremen’s name he was a little surprised. The man was young and had just been hired as the new Potions Professor. It would be good to have someone along his same line of expertise to discuss matters. Richard would get in contact with him as soon as he could. He was hoping Will would come on an outing with his Herbology class.
This statement made no sense to Richard. Why would she be worrying about turning into a bird, a bird of fire. Then the words made a little sense, a bird of fire was a phoenix, because it was always on fire and was born out of the ashes of its own death. But she could not become one. Richard did not want to stop her talking now though, because she was giving him information and he had even seen the beginning of a possible break in the mood.
Rosa seemed slightly lost in her own thoughts and Richard was listening hard to try and not miss a clue. “…Healing plants are there…” His mind was working on the puzzle quickly while listening to anything else the girl might say. Plants meant growth, but where was “there”? She had mentioned the Dark Forest earlier so “there” must mean the forest. The word “because” still puzzled him. She must have been solving her own riddle out load.
Before Richard could think of an answer to her question, Rosa became very frightened and ran from the room in a panic. He rose and went to the door, but looking out he did not see her. There was no one else in the common room he could even ask which way she had run. Richard shook his head and banged his fist on the door jam. Everything seemed to have been going well. Rosa was starting to open up to him. Turning he examined the room to see what may have frightened her. As his eyes roamed over the furniture nothing looked out of place. The walls had not all of a sudden moved nor had anything sprout out of them. The floor seemed solid. Then his eyes caught the view of the windowsill. Walking in long strides toward it he grabbed the three black roses lying on it and examined them. Turning to look at the closed office door he thought “Where in the devil did these come from?” They had not been there when he had checked out the comfort aspect of the room just before their meeting. Rosa had mentioned black roses and now they appeared on the sill. Since they were far above ground level, someone had to put them there. There were very few people who could enter the room, one in particular came to mind. “Strike three, Mr. Caretaker. We will be seeing each other very soon.” Richard thought to himself.

Rosa
He had caught the pause in Rosa’s explanation. “Who can I talk to Rosabelle? Was someone else there that night? I can only help totally if I know all the details. Was the person a friend or with the caretaker?” Richard wondered if he had more than one person he was going to have to go up against.
“Rosabelle I do not think you are a latent, but I will check it out for you, if I have your permission of course.”
Rosa nodded as she said, "I am marked as getting my magic on my tenth birthday, though my brother Rome said that I first showed at two. I would like to know."
“Rosa, look at me.
She turned to face him.
Child you did not cause the death of your mother. No matter what people have told you, or how they have tried to frighten you, you are not the cause. Sometimes evil adults use fright, especially with children to control the situation.
You must trust in the adults you love and those who really care about you to help you live up to your full potential. The people, who are frightening you, may be worried if you reach your highest level of magic They may be worried you will be too powerful, and come after them, so they are making sure you do not try and become powerful. Do you understand child?”
“Rosa, if you can trust me, I will try and help you. If you do not know if you can trust me, find an adult you do trust, maybe Professor Richards or Tarik, or even Deputy Head Mistress McChey.
Ask anyone you truly in your heart you know you can trust to check me out. I would not mind.”
Rosa smiled as she asked, "Professor Greene, if there any healing meds that you can make with Black Roses?" It was time those roses that was always left for her was put to use.
“Rosa, are you the daughter of Councilman Lucas Fairmont? If so child he would be good to ask. Also if your sister is Lily Lupin, you can check with Gabriel Lupin on my credentials.”
Rosa smile widen until she saw the Black Roses on the window. With tears, in her eyes, Rosa ran from the room.

Richard
Trying to sound calm as she said, "Sir, I just didn't want Will, I mean Professor Fremen in trouble. He got on the Caretaker's case that night and well Mr. Mirabeau was not happy."
Rosa started to cry as she nodded and said, "but I don't want to be a bird that hurts people, all I ever wanted was to be a healer. Mama's wrong, I won't be that bird of fire, I won't"
Rosa smiled as she tried to think of why she always went into the forest. Saying in a low voice as if to herself, "It because the best healing plants are in there."
Rosa smiled as she asked, "Professor Green, if there any healing meds that you can make with Black Roses?" It was time those roses that was always left for her was put to use…. Rosa smile widen until she saw the Black Roses on the window. With tears, in her eyes, Rosa ran from the room.
