King's Cross Station, - The Whistle Blows (Open)
Flo Richards
Professor Flo Richards stood on platform 9 3/4, in Kings Cross Station, smiling at all of the children and adults creating an excited noise. It was chaotic but wonderful, because it meant the start of a new year at the school. The sun was shining bright in a perfectly azure sky, with only a sprinkling of cotton soft clouds. She stood about the middle of the train and watched as the children came through the portal from the London Station and down the walkway from the magical world. The engine off to her left, steamed. The baggage loaders at the far end of the train yelled and worked to get the mountain of luggage of the children's onto the train. Adults talked and said their good-bys. Some of the older children barely gave their parents time to say good-by before they were jumping onto the train and loudly greeting their friends. Flo's son Marshall was already on the train, in the third car, waiting for his friends. Occasionally she would see him looking out the window and waving.
Flo had volunteered to be one of the people giving information to the new students and relieving some of the anxiety of the parents of the schools newest members. Some of the children looked so young, although she knew they were at least 10-years-of-age. A small blond girl came up to her and asked if she could sit anywhere on the train. Her parents hovered behind her. Flo nodded and told the girl that most of the newer students sat in the second car, but if she wanted to sit somewhere else, that would be fine. The first car had tables if she preferred that. The girl had smiled back, and her parents had offered their thanks.
Several more students came forward, some to get information on whether she had seen one of their friends, or just to say hello. Flo answered their questions and sent them on their way. When she looked at her watch, she realized there was only an hour left before the train would be pulling out. Some of the students she had expected to arrive already, were still not there, but there was still time.
LANCE KILDARE
Doctor Lance Kildare slowly patrolled the trains cars. He was looking forward this year to being fully in charge of the medical unit at Hogwarts. Over the summer he had worked to put all of his duties, as Resident Medical Examiner, at St. Muggles into other competent hands. Stopping to look out the window, he saw Flo, someone he also had decided to make more important in his life this year. It was time to make the woman see, that he cared for her and her son. He still had not spoken to Tarik Sadaki, the Runes Professor and offered for her. Flo, had been married to Tarik's son, before he was killed the day Marshall had been born. The man had taken Flo into his heart and was a father as well as a father-in-law. Lance felt it was only proper to talk with the man first.
Smiling he continued down the corridor, greeting students and making sure all their questions were answered. He had ridden the train before, but never on the first day. He was having great fun. Students jostled for seats in the different small rooms. The snack cart lady was already doing a brisk business. Although, the owls and the larger pets were being well taken care of in the pet car, some of the smaller animals could be seen peeking out of the luggage in the over head shelves and snuggling in the corner of some of the compartments. Professor English, the Care of Magical Creatures teacher, helped with most of the veterinarian duties, but Lance knew the Head Mistress Sasha McChey was looking into the possibility of having a full time vet at the school.
He or she would be a very busy person, because Hogsmeade Village still needed help with some of their misplaced forest creatures also. When eighty percent of the forest had been consumed in an intentionally set fire, a year ago, many of the animals started depending on the village for food and medical needs. There was a very good system of feeding and care set up, but they could always use more help.
Lance continued toward the front of the train. Checking his watch, he found they still had about an hour, before they left the station. Smiling he knew it was going to be a good year
