Desmond Doddridge was born and raised in Scotland. He was passed back and forth between his parents and his grandparents, as his mother and father lived a fairly unstable life. His father, Marcus, was the town drunk. His mother, who was the only one in his family besides himself with magical blood, worked as a servant for a very wealthy wizarding family in a nearby village. Desmond never went to school much while he was living in Scotland, as he felt it was pretty much worthless. Instead, he spent most of his time on the street, nicking bits of food and goods from local businesses. While his mother worked and his father got drunk at the local pubs, he became quite skilled in living off of the streets. His family never had much money, because his mother was paid very little and his father spent most of their money, either at the pub or in card games. His mother was the only person who showed the slightest interest Desmond, though he continued living his rebellious ways. When things got bleak and he would be sent to his grandparents, his grandmother and grandfather would call his mother 'that worthless hag' right in front of him. Thus, he was glad when he received his Hogwarts letter and got to leave everything behind.
As his family never had money, Desmond had no choice but to rely on the special fund Hogwarts gave to less fortunate wizarding children. He boarded the Hogwarts Express that September with all of his school supplies being secondhand and beat up. While he was slightly embarrassed at this, he knew what he was going to was much better than what he was leaving behind. He arrived in the Great Hall that night with all of the other first years and walked nervously to the sorting hat to be sorted. The sorting hat picked at his brain and played several mind games with him. He had been sitting on the stool for a little bit over two minutes before the hat shouted "SLYTHERIN!"
His school years went by without much trouble. He was never the best in any class, and his marks certainly showed it. Before his sixth year, his parents hardly noticed that he had only received four O.W.L.s from the school. However, what he lacked in book smarts, he made up for with street smarts. He was part of a gang of Slytherins that were all known as nothing more than bullying cronies. He wasn't very popular outside of Slytherin.
When he left Hogwarts after his seventh year (managing to barely get N.E.W.T.s in the same subjects he had received O.W.L.s in) he made a living being a dirty crook. He sold useless items that didn't work, imported stolen cauldrons and wands, and even managed to get into the business of flying carpets (which, of course, the Ministry of Magic has outlawed). A few years after his gradutation, he joined up with a small band of thieves that called themselves The Seven. He never would have thought that the little group he joined would have grown into the large organization that they are now. While he is definitely not one of Marsden's closest six friends, he has proven himself quite skilled as a lawbreaker and worked hard to get where he is in The Seven's Hierarchy. When he's not on assignment, he spends his days overseeing projects on the third island in the chain known as Seven Deaths.
